Introduction

Learning vocabulary is a very important part of learning a language. The more words we know, the more we can understand what we hear or read, and the better we can say what we mean when speaking or writing.

In the process of learning English, we every day hear or read many new English words. At that time, we can find them in the dictionary. However, we can’t possibly learn all these new words, so our first problem is to decide which ones to concentrate on.

To help English learners find out the better way to enrich vocabulary, SPEAK UP is going to hold a seminar.

RHYTHMS IN ENGLISH SPEAKING

I. INTRODUCTION

English is a very rhythmical language, so that a learner who can maintain the rhythm of the language is more likely to sound both natural and fluent. The two components of the system which have the greatest influence on rhythm are sentence stress and the various features of connected speech, i.e. what happens to words when we put them in an utterance.

II. OBJECTIVE

1. To help you master the rhythm in spoken English in order to speak English like a native speaker.
2. In the seminar, you are going

• To get natural models of the RHYTHM
• To listen carefully to authentic speech
• To know the rule of the RHYTHM in SPOKEN ENGLISH

To integrate rhythm and other aspects of phonology into grammar, vocabulary and functional language lessons as well as listening and speaking activities.

Dear all,

It is important to stress the correct syllable in English words because:

1. There is a customary way to pronounce words. If you stress syllables that are not normally stressed, or do not stress the syllables that are normally stressed, the hearer may not readily understand what you are saying. 

2. The stress changes the meaning of some words:

If you do not stress the correct syllables, you will probably still be understood by most native speakers. However, communication will be so much easier if words are spoken as they are normally spoken, i.e. with the stress on the correct syllables.

To help you all get the exact rule of stress without the help of the dictionary, SPEAK UP holds the class:

RULES OF THE STRESS IN ENGLISH

After the seminar, you do not need the help of the dictionary, but you can have the right stress in any English word.
